What a clinic is worth depends entirely on preparation
A clinic that could have been given to any band in the country is a nice morning and changes nothing. The ones worth paying for are built around what your players are struggling with, which means a conversation before the date rather than a set program.
Two things move the price and both are practical: where the class is, and how many players will be in the room. A sectional with eight saxophones and a full-band clinic with sixty are different pieces of work and I'd rather quote them differently than average them.
The work I get asked for most often is tone and articulation in a section that has been taught individually and never as a group, improvisation for players who read well and freeze without a page, and the gap between what jazz band charts assume and what a school section has been taught. All three respond quickly, which is why a single visit is worth doing rather than only a residency.
For directors, the useful part is usually that somebody from outside says the thing you've been saying all semester. That's no criticism of you. It's how fourteen-year-olds work, and it's worth budgeting for on that basis alone.
I play professionally in this city most weeks, which matters for a clinic in one specific way: the students can hear what's being asked of them, immediately, rather than being told about it.
