Music that people talk over is a different product
A restaurant doesn't want a show. It wants the room to feel like somewhere worth staying an extra drink in, at a volume where a table of four can hear each other. That's a small group, a lot of restraint, and a set list built to sit underneath a room rather than on top of it. It's harder than playing loud and it's what a jazz combo is for.
A private party or a corporate event is usually the opposite problem: nobody dances until somebody does, and the band's job for the first hour is to make the room feel handled. Suits Big Band plays pop and soul from the last fifty years for exactly that reason, because a floor fills to songs people already know.
Fast Travel is the third option and it's a different kind of booking. A three to seven piece band playing video game music live, which lands with an audience nobody else is programming for. It has played rooms in this city and it works best where the crowd skews toward people who grew up with the material and have never heard it played by a horn section.
For venues, the practical things matter more than the artistic ones: how much floor the group needs, whether you have power where the band goes, what time load-in can happen, and whether the room has a piano worth using. Tell me those four and the quote will be right the first time.
Recurring bookings are worth asking about. A room that has live music on the same night every month builds an audience for it, which a one-off never does, and I'd rather build that with a venue than play one busy Saturday.
